STANLEY JOSEPH PUCHNIAK
Stanley Joseph Puchniak, 92, passed away peacefully in the evening on February 26, 2026, at River Park Gardens in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the city he called home for his entire life.
Born in Winnipeg, Stan was an active and accomplished young man. He excelled in rowing, receiving numerous honors, and was known for his legendary stories of swimming across the Red River to row at the Winnipeg Rowing Club. His athleticism extended beyond rowing, as he enjoyed playing basketball and football at St. Paul’s High School. Stan’s life was one of dedication to both personal achievement and his community.
After graduating from St. Paul’s High School, Stan pursued his education and earned both the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Chartered Accountant (CA) designations. He was deeply committed to sharing his knowledge and passion for accounting, teaching many classes for the CMA and helping countless people along the way. Stan’s career as an accountant was marked by passion for private accounting, assisting friends and businesses. His long tenure with the Manitoba government culminated in his role as Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance, where he made a lasting impact.
Stan was incredibly devoted to his family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and he often spoke fondly of his siblings: Mary, Eleanor, Pat, Ed, and John. He cherished time spent with his wife Darlene and their children Mike, Steve, Tannis, and Stan Jr., and was deeply proud of them all. His love for family extended to his extended family, with whom he shared countless memories.
Throughout his life, Stan’s interests were varied, but he was especially passionate about helping others. He was an active member of Christ the King and Our Lady of Victory churches, where he volunteered his time and energy. Additionally, he supported organizations like the Riverside Lions, Knights of Columbus, and Franciscan Friars. Stan’s giving nature, combined with his faith and commitment to helping those in need, left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Stan’s favorite quote, which encapsulated his approach to life, was: “The only people that do not make mistakes are those that do nothing.” It was a sentiment he lived by, encouraging others to always try, learn, and grow.
Stan is survived by his wife, Darlene, his children, Mike, Steve, Tannis, and Stan Jr., as well as his extended family and a wide circle of friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Stan’s life will be held on (date to be determined). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the United Way.
Stan will be remembered for his generosity, his kindness, and the enduring love he shared with his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, faith, and a lifelong commitment to making the world a better place.
