It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Melvin on July 8, 2026 at St Boniface Hospital, at the age of 91.
Melvin Albert Swereda was born on February 11, 1935 in Olha, Manitoba to Jessie (Kaskiw) and Anton Swereda. He was the second youngest in a family of ten.
Mel leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife Anne. Together they shared 38 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, faith, family and an unwavering commitment to each other.
Mel is survived by three sons, Lloyd (Patti), Dale and Jeff; his grandchildren Cathy (Kevin) and Jennifer (Sean), Lindsay (Jeremy), Kelsey (Jacob), and Dylan (Kim); great-grandchildren Braxton and Lachlyn, Sebastian and Charlotte, and Bella and Avery, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He will also be missed by Anne’s children, Debbie, Kelly (Ellen) and Kim (George), and their children Julia, Corey and Kyle.
Melvin was predeceased by his parents Anton and Jessie, sisters Anne Borody and Marion Fuhr, and brothers Peter, Harry, Matt, Mike, Walter, Stanley and Joe.
Mel was employed by the City of Winnipeg Fire Department, serving as a firefighter for 31 years, retiring in 1993 with the rank of Captain.
He was the owner and operator of Five Star Diamond Drilling for 41 years.
Mel was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where he sang in the choir.
He was a member of the Ukrainian National Home.
Mel was a member of Legion #141 for 30 years, where he and his wife Anne enjoyed attending Saturday dances.
He was a volunteer for the Remembrance Day Poppy Fund.
He was also a member of the Dufferin Seniors’ Centre.
Mel and Anne enjoyed traveling from the East to West coasts of Canada, to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico and throughout the United States.
They also enjoyed many camping trips with their motorhome.
Mel had a wide variety of interests and hobbies including bowling at Mosienko Lanes, playing cards, fishing, and picking mushrooms and blueberries.
Mel faced his illness with great courage and determination, while maintaining his sense of humor, calm demeanor and interest in life. Goodbye Mel. You are so loved and will be missed by many, especially your beloved wife Anne. Rest in peace, Mel. Safe in Heaven with no more pain.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday July 16, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with public visitation at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church 211 Kimberly Ave, officiated by Pastor Paul Johnson.
Interment at All Saints Cemetery 4535 Main St Winnipeg.
