VICTORIA MARGARET MAKOWSKI

Victoria Margaret Makowski (nee Maksymchuk) passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Health Sciences Centre.

Vickie was born in the Basswood area on October 19, 1937 to Metro and Sophie Maksymchuk. At the age of seven her family moved to a farm near Erickson where she attended grade school. In her late teens, with the encouragement of her Dad, Vickie moved to Winnipeg to live with her Aunt Mary Willis and attend the Manitoba Institute of Technology.  Vickie completed her secretarial training and immediately was employed.  On holidays Vickie would travel back to Erickson to visit her family. It was on one of those visits that she met her husband Bill. A year later, on July 18, 1964 they were married having two weddings, one in Erickson and one in Dauphin. Together they made a wonderful life in Winnipeg for nearly 55 years. While Bill was teaching, Vickie cherished her employment at Neilson Chocolates, where she worked for 18 years. In 1973, Vickie was diagnosed with cancer and left her position to deal with her illness. Through faith Vickie was able to persevere and overcome her health challenges throughout the years until her passing. She lived each day to the fullest enjoying her projects of creating beautiful ceramics, admiring her beautiful flowers and caring for the many pets that became a part of her home, especially Patches the dog.

Throughout her retirement years, Vickie and Bill had the opportunity to tour places throughout North America, vacation in Hawaii and enjoyed the adventures on cruises. Gathering together with friends and family for a good party was were highlights that she treasured. Vickie comes from a large extended family which she welcomed into her home graciously for visits, or even for extended stays to help them get their start in the big city.  We will miss her spirit of determination, her care and love.

Vickie will be missed by her best friend and husband Bill. She is survived by her sister Lorraine (Michael) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt Street.
