RICHARD CARL CLEMENT

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Carl Clement in Winnipeg, Manitoba on the 10th day of September, 2022 at the age of 78.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Anne (nee Brunton) and daughters Alicia (Miles) and Gillian, two grandsons Carlen and Graeme, his sisters Beverly Duguay and Patricia (Richard) Plouffe and his brother Larry Clement in Ontario as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by his mother, Florianne and his father, Stanley of Sudbury, Ontario.

Richard left home at the age of 18 to serve his country as part of the 58th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, finishing as a Lance Bombardier. He then moved into a Military Police role as part of the 2nd Provost Corps. Richard was stationed in Petawawa and London, ON and served six months in Cyprus as a UN Peace-Keeper. He also earned his paratrooper wings after training in Rivers and Camp Shilo.

After his time in the Military, he became a respected Officer with the Winnipeg Police Department. He was an officer for almost 32 years, where he gave and earned the respect of all people he encountered. Whether patrolling by car, motorcycle or on foot, he brought a strong sense of compassion to his work and interactions. He also enjoyed being an instructor at the police academy, being a plain clothes detective and acting Sergeant. Richard was a 31 year member of the Norwood Legion where he enjoyed many games of pool with his friends and also other members.

Richard was a humble, loving father, grandfather and handyman who taught his family many things throughout the years. He was always willing to lend an ear and offer his help, encouragement and strength. He was generous with his time and talents, and quick to offer support and resources to anyone in need.

During his free-time throughout the years, and especially during retirement, Richard enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Laclu, Ontario. He worked on many projects there over the years. Whether he was building a screened porch, a dock, putting an extension on a cabin, lumber jacking, cutting grass, dry-walling, plumbing or applying his electrical skills, he still made time to enjoy “lake life”. He enjoyed taking friends and family on boat rides, fishing, kneeboarding, cliff jumping etc. Richard also enjoyed playing cards, especially poker and relaxing on the porch with a good cup of coffee.

Special thanks to Dr. Gingerich at Cancercare for his compassionate care. Thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital (5th and 8th floor) and the staff at Park Manor Care Home. Thanks also to his numerous home care aides and to Pascal in particular, who showed great care, respect and compassion, and was by his side for many months.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

Donations can be made to a charity of your choice or please continue Richard’s legacy of generosity by helping out the less fortunate in any way you are able.
