PETER READ HENRY

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Peter on November 29, 2024, in Winnipeg at age 85, with family by his side.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Ruth, children Carolin, Bruce (Margot), Kurt (Marnie) & Deanna (Jo), granddaughters Alannah (Rob), Rebecca (Torey) and great granddaughters Finnley and Atley, as well as cousins, numerous nieces, a nephew, great nieces, great great nieces and a great nephew. He was predeceased by son-in law Jack and granddaughter Kendra.

Peter was born in Winnipeg on February 8, 1939 to the late George and Gladys Henry.

Peter met Ruth in Montreal in their Rover and Ranger days. Dad enlisted in the Air Force in 1959 and their military life started in Gimli. Postings took them to Germany, Cold Lake, Portage la Prairie and finally to Winnipeg where Dad took off his uniform and retired for the first time. He continued supporting the Air Force as a public servant before fully retiring in 2002, with 43 dedicated years of combined service. He maintained his affiliation with the St. James Legion into retirement in various capacities, most prominently as a member of the Colour Party.

Peter’s passion for the outdoors and his lifelong interest in teaching and developing youth led him to volunteer in the education program at Fort Whyte Alive for 22 years. Another interest was line dancing and square dancing with Ruth. Although they had not danced in a couple of years, the camaraderie of their groups was important, and the friendships continued. Dad enjoyed bowling, initially with his daughter Carolin at Dakota Lanes and until a year ago, at St. James Lanes. Dad also curled at the Assiniboine Curling Club.

Along with their amazing worldwide travels, Peter and Ruth enjoyed 31 summers at Netley Resorts where Peter continued his love of duck hunting from his canoe.

Many thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Grace Hospital, 3 South West Wing for their kind care and attention while Peter was in hospital for the final stages of liver disease.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the St. James Legion (1755 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg) on Saturday December 14th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, considerations can be made to Fort Whyte Alive or to a charity of your choice.
