GORDON SCHMIDT August 29, 1928 – July 7, 2016
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the age of 87 years. Gordon leaves this earthly home to join hands once again with his wife Gladys, who passed away March 9, 2015. He is survived by his children, Kimberley (Bob), Murray (Cheryl) and Dave; loving grandchildren, Kelly, Erin and Natalie; as well as sisters Olga, Marjorie, Adeline and Clara. On August 29, 1928, Gordon was born in Neudorf, Saskatchewan. He supported the family farm, threshing, stooking and hauling sheaves. There he also met the love of his life Gladys Heschel. They married in Winnipeg, and celebrated their 62nd anniversary on October 14, 2014. As a young man, Gordon trained one of the farm horses Lucy, a Clydesdale horse, to perform tricks such as balancing all four hooves on a small block of wood, or pawing the ground a number of times to determine how old you were. Gordon and Lucy were a hit at many town picnics. Gordon loved his garden and his yard. He grew large flavourful tomatoes every year from seed. Both he and Gladys worked side by side tending their flowers together. Gordon was an avid Blue Bomber and Winnipeg Jets fan, enjoying the games with Gladys on the big screen at the McPhillips casino. He enjoyed a successful career as a realtor for over 30 years. He was recognized as top salesman on numerous occasions. On Monday, July 11, 2016, Gordon’s Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street, Winnipeg, with Pastor Don Engel, presider. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to the Service. A private family Interment will be held. The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff at the Victoria Hospital 5th floor south. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6.
