DOUGLAS (DOUG) EDWARD GRANT
26 APR 1952 – 04 JAN 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Doug Grant on January 4, 2026 at the age of 73.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Mirriam Grant. Doug is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Margaret, his brother Ross, his sister Linda, his cousin Judith and extended family who were also dear friends.
Born into a military family in Vancouver, British Columbia, Doug entered the world at 9:00 pm, marked by the sound of the gun in Stanley Park—a story his family always cherished. A few years later, the family moved to Kingston, Ontario, where Doug grew up on the armed forces base alongside his older brother Ross, enjoying an idyllic childhood by the St. Lawrence River. Eventually, he returned to Winnipeg, where extended family connections remained strong throughout his life.
Doug worked for Great-West Life for 25 years, rising through the ranks to become Manager of Information Technology Operations Management. In this role, he oversaw Help Desk Management, Installation Coordination, IT Technical Support and Data Centre Management. Doug led with exceptional communication skills and a genuine care and support of his staff.
Doug met Margaret while working at Great-West Life and from that moment on, they were inseparable. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared purpose, including creating a cherished cottage by the lake where countless happy hours were spent with family and friends.
A devoted animal lover, Doug shared his life with two high energy and affectionate Vizslas and even cared for a rescued hare. He spent many hours at the dog park, becoming a familiar and beloved presence. Dogs and their owners alike were drawn to him—Doug always had time for a kind word, helpful advice, and, of course, plenty of affection for every four-legged visitor.
Doug was a deeply thoughtful and observant person, someone who noticed the smallest details others might miss. His generosity reflected that attentiveness—his gifts were never just for occasions, but offered exactly when they were needed most.
He was the kind of person who quietly stepped in to help without being asked—whether reaching an item from a high shelf or helping someone out of a snowbank. With a smile and a shrug, Doug showed up for others. He encouraged, teased, and made people laugh, and those around him always knew they were loved.
Doug will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Cremation has taken place, and in keeping with Doug’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral.
In the days ahead, we know that any time spent together will naturally be filled with shared memories of Doug—stories, laughter, and the moments that made him who he was to all of us.
Should you wish, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to an animal shelter/rescue of your choice.
