Doreen Akins

November 9, 1932 - February 9, 2016

DOREEN AKINS (nee INNES)
1932 – 2016

On Tuesday afternoon, February 9, 2016, Doreen passed quietly away at the Golden West Centennial Lodge, where she had been a resident for the past three and a half years. Her husband of 58 years, Bill; son Clive and daughter Susan, were there to comfort and assist her.
Doreen suffered from dementia. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude for the love, attention and fine care she received throughout her decline.
On November 9, 1932 Doreen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the only child of Frank and Peggy Innes. She was raised and attended school in St. Vital and St. Mary’s Academy. Summers were spent at Grand Beach. Prior to marriage, Doreen was employed by Trans Canada Airlines. In 1958, she married Bill and together they raised Clive and Susan on Brock Street, River Heights, and later Kilkenny Drive, Fort Richmond.
In 1985, Doreen and Bill moved to Lethbridge, Alberta to facilitate Bill’s new career as an educator. After twenty-two years spent happily and productively there, they returned to Winnipeg in 2007 due to Doreen’s failing health and the desire to reunite with extended family. They took up residence on Portage Avenue, where for several years, Doreen was able to enjoy the quiet and serenity of the river lot and adjacent Assiniboine Park. Her final years were spent under the kind care of the Golden West Centennial Lodge.
In compliance with Doreen’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held.
