FRIEDA FLORENCE KLAPPRAT (NEE MIDDLESTEAD)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frieda Florence Klapprat (nee Middlestead), beloved Mother, Grandmother, sister and aunt. She passed the evening of Saturday, August 8th, 2026 at her residence of Park Manor Care Home at the age of 95.

Frieda was predeceased by her much-loved husband of 52 years, Harry, sisters Edna (Emil), Myrtle (Mike), Martha (James), and brothers Walter (Irene), Arthur (Claire) and George. She leaves to mourn her loss daughter Cheryl, son Duane, daughter-in-law Kathy, grandchildren Brittney and Cody, brother Richard, sisters-in-law Bernice Middlestead, Sharon Middlestead, Helen Klapprat and Malvinia Klapprat as well as many nieces and nephews.

Frieda was born on February 8, 1931, the fifth of eight children born to Fred and Johanna Middlestead. Life on the farm was hard but was always filled with love and music. Frieda left the farm at 18, moving in with her sister Edna, to find employment in Winnipeg. She worked in various industries including a bakery, advertising, Eaton’s and the Free Press. In 1959 she married the love of her life, Harry and they were blessed with 2 children, Cheryl in 1960 and Duane in 1963. Mom spent the next decades making a loving home for her family. After Duane married Kathy Riddolls in 1997, they gave Mom her greatest treasures, her grandchildren. Brittney was born in 1998 and Cody in 2001.

Frieda enjoyed music and loved when her extended family would gather for sing-a-longs. She loved to garden and took delight when neighbours would stop to admire her flower beds. Mom also enjoyed going out to their second home in Moosehorn where she delighted in bingo and fishing.

After Harry’s passing in 2011, Frieda moved into an apartment at Kildonan House where she spent many happy years. Once her health declined, she moved into Park Manor Care Home for a brief period of time.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 21st, 2026 at Grace Lutheran Church (211 Kimberly Ave) with a luncheon to follow. A private internment will take place at a later date. Thank you to the staff of Concordia Hospital and Park Manor Care Home for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice

Precious Lord, Take my hand, Lead me on, Let me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storm, thru the night, lead me on to the light. Take my hand, Precious Lord, Lead me home.

March 7, 1959 – August 7, 2026

Dale Carter, 67, of Springfield, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a short illness.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Dale’s career in radio took him to many communities across Canada, where he made lasting friendships and touched countless lives. Dale had a love for the outdoors and found great joy in life’s simple pleasures — camping trips with his family, quiet evenings around a backyard fire, and days spent fishing from his boat.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Kathy, daughter Samantha, and all who knew him.

At Dale’s request, no funeral service will be held.

Ernest (Ernie) John Wilkie

Ernest John Wilkie, known to most as Ernie, passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 92.

Ernie and his wife Joan were married for 70 years until her passing in April 2026. Together, they raised three children: Allan (Beverly), Karen (Doug), and Kelly (Ed). Their family continued to grow over the years to include seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, who brought Ernie great joy and pride. He was predeceased by his parents, Dick and Etta; his sister, Evelyn; his son, Al; and his granddaughter, Laura.

Born in Carberry, Manitoba, Ernie spent most of his adult life in Winnipeg. He enjoyed a long career with Canadian Indemnity, where he worked as a Claims Manager until his retirement in 1984. Retirement gave Ernie the opportunity to pursue another of his interests—cars. He enjoyed buying and selling automobiles through his business as an automobile broker. He also took great pleasure in woodworking and could often be found working on one project or another.

In his younger years, Ernie enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He also took up curling, and then floor curling, enjoying both the competition and the camaraderie that came with them. His love of baseball and curling stayed with him throughout his life, and he continued to enjoy watching them on television.

Ernie was a longtime resident of St. James. In later years, he lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence before moving to Oakview Personal Care Home.

Ernie’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the many friends, family members, and care staff who supported him and were an important part of his life over the years. Their kindness and care are deeply appreciated.

At Ernie’s request, no funeral service is planned.

LORNA MAY WHILLIER

Peacefully on August 4th 2026 during the night, after managing Alzheimer's like a champ, Lorna, Mom Grandma and Auntie decide to leave us for a peaceful rest, although she is no longer here she assured us she is with her God and Family in heaven above, but also wanted to ensure everyone she loves down here on Earth knows she will symbolically return to watch over and protect you, so if you see a butterfly or suddenly bright blue surrounds you, she is present in your life, because you mattered to her. If you see a blue butterfly that's real presence.

Her time at Lions Manor Care Home was a comforting experience with a great routine and activities, genuine staff support and care, loving friendly care workers who helped her manage the days with all they could do for her, they expressed how they will miss her kind, smile and warm heart, we her family thank them from the bottom of our hearts.

Such a great long life at 85 she out lived all her peers and origin family, preceded by her parents Laura and George Whillier and her dear only sister Lorraine Beardsley, our father Peter Van Went (Dianne), sister in-law and long time friends Alice Brennan and many more friends, I can see why she was ready to join them.

Although she will be sorrowfully missed by her Children; Crystal, Wendy, Anthony, Lawrence (Sharri) and Jannetje. Grandchildren; Darrel (Serena), Garret, Matthew and Christopher, Devon and Daniel, Cecily (Dillon) and Bailey, Nephews and Nieces; Brian, Kirk (Kim), Kevin (Bernadette) and Susan and many grandnieces and nephews all want her to have a peaceful rest and be close to her God in heaven.

Being a resident of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for her whole life she is a true blue Pegger who had a deep love for her City, Provence and Country.

Being a mother of 5 brought her love and joy, being a nurse at HSC senior services was her destiny, she lived to her fullest and brought life, light, color and positivity to everyone and everything she did, a collector of everything she enjoyed sharing her finds and wisdom with everyone.

She enjoyed an active interest in outside organizations and affiliations with all her close acquaintances at the Rebeka Lodge, HSC Retiree's association

Sunsets, the color blue and butterfly's really sums up her style and person, always taking time to stop and enjoy the little things and the gifts earth offers as she mentions in her book of poems and short stories, Inspired by Faith, Love and Life she was a writer at rest, and got awards for the best, dedicated to her mother Laura who loved her work, Lorna professes "Today is a Gift, that is why it is called the Present!" She saw life as an adventure to relish.

She won awards for her photos and her collection of sunsets and sunrises is telling of her love for life, nature and the world.

A beautiful person with the bluest of blue eyes, She had the biggest heart, sweet, kind and filled with enough love to share with everyone, fun and free with a side of intelligence, strong feminine ideals and perspectives.

She loved to read, write and learn, before Google search, there was Lorna, a fact and knowledge dictionary of the obscure, prominent, historic and profound, ask and she has the answers.

She loved animals and had many pets, Amos and Andy, Dolly, Lady, Sam, Misty and Spot her dear hearts and faithful friends she cared for and loved throughout her life.

There is no space to list the collections she had, but she was happily surrounded by some of her favourite finds through the years till the end.

The viewing on August 4, 2026 at 9:30 am will precede a future date when her oldest daughter Crystal can be with us to spread her ashes as she wished in the water so she can ebb and flow forever in nature. At that future time we will have a family celebration of life in remembrance.

She had pastoral care through her time in Lion's Care we are thankful for Greg his gentle care and time making my mom feel closer to her God, he took time to read to her and spent time keeping her company through the weeks, months and years she managed Alzheimer's we can never express what this means to us, except ...Blessed

Special thanks to the managers and staff at Lions Manor Care Home the cooperative ways we managed her care and needs together, made having her in care a comfort to her and our family, there is great rewards for people who give so much to meet the needs of others, truly her peaceful time and rest in their care was God sent.

Donations to Siloam Missions in lieu of flowers was her wish.

Finally Wojcik's, Rachel, Shannon and staff, the family care model of peaceful rest in their hands has made this overwhelming event warm, comforting and special, the accommodations and support, flawless professionalism is a treasure in our province, we don't know how we could have done this without you, truly thankful.

Peaceful rest and safe accent to God, Family, Loved ones and heavenly palace we wish our mother, grandmother, aunt and best friend a new and hopeful well deserved beginning.

Alex always enjoyed sitting around and telling war stories, He never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Born and raised on Cape Breton Island, he always had that down-home welcome attitude. Dad, along with Mom, were always willing to help anyone out. Always met you with a laugh, and a joke, and an open home.

Dad served over 32 years in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1964 to 1996. He joined the Canadian Guards and once the Regiment was disbanded he re badged to the Royal Canadian Regiment and finally retired as part of the Canadian Forces Postal Service.

MARILYN OLIVE MCEACHERN CROOKS
FEBRUARY 2, 1950 - JULY 28, 2026

It is with deep sadness that we share that Marilyn McEachern Crooks passed away peacefully at her home in Winnipeg on July 28, 2026.

Marilyn was born in 1950 in Carman, Manitoba to her parents Mary McEachern (née Innes) and Archibald McEachern. Marilyn grew up on a farm near town with her siblings, Malcolm and Margaret. She had fond memories of her childhood on the farm, surrounded by family, including her two older half siblings Eldon & Jack, their wives and their children (her nieces and nephews) who lived nearby and visited often.

After graduating high school in 1967, Marilyn moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba. There she met lifelong friends and Buzz (Lloyd) Crooks, her future husband. Marilyn and Buzz married in September 1969 and welcomed their first child, Stacey, in 1970, followed by Shannon (1973), Whitney (1978), and Robert (1982). While her children were young, Marilyn was a busy mom and active community volunteer. Once Robert was in school, she returned to University and completed a BA in Economics at the University of Manitoba. She followed this by becoming a Certified Management Accountant and later completing an MBA at Athabasca University.

Marilyn went on to have a successful and interesting career. She worked for several non-profits in the 1990s and early 2000s. She particularly enjoyed her time working with arts organizations, including Prairie Theatre Exchange. In the early 2000s she began working for the government of Manitoba as a Manager of Finance and Audit. She officially retired from government in 2017 although she continued working part time for a few years, including a stint as an on-set accountant for a film company,

Marilyn loved her hometown and often spoke fondly of Carman and especially of growing up on the idyllic McEachern farm on the Boyne River. She also grew to love Winnipeg, the place where she raised her family and grew her career. She and Buzz particularly appreciated Winnipeg’s vibrant theatre, music and restaurant scene. They enjoyed attending theatre and festivals in the city and looked forward to heading out to Bird’s Hill Provincial Park for a weekend at the Winnipeg Folk Festival every summer.

Marilyn appreciated a good walk, a good book, and a good meal. She enjoyed travel and she and Buzz spoke fondly of their trips, especially to the maritimes, Vancouver Island and San Francisco. After Buzz passed away in 2015, Marilyn traveled less but she was grateful to make two trips to Scotland, the ‘old sod,’ with her family. Her first trip was with her three daughters in 2024 and she returned in 2025 with her daughter, Stacey, and Stacey’s family. A highlight of that trip was visiting Banff, her grandfather’s place of birth.

Family was the most important thing to Marilyn, and in her later years, she treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. With her daughter Whitney, she purchased a cottage in Matlock, Manitoba in 2018, down the street from the cottage of her eldest daughter, and son-in-law.. Many happy hours, days and weeks were spent at the lake with children and grandchildren. Marilyn loved the being in the water, watching the variety of birds that visited her backyard, and spending an evening on the porch with family and a nice glass of wine.

Marilyn was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2023. She continued to enjoy visits with family and friends, travel and spending time at some of her favourite places. Her final months were spent in the company of her children and grandchildren. She was able to return home for her final weeks and have a few more good porch visits before the end.

Marilyn is survived by her brother, Malcolm McEachern (Kathy), her children Stacey Crooks (Chris Sale), Shannon Crooks (Tommy Thornton), Whitney Crooks (Ashley Singh) and Robert Crooks, and her grandchildren, Emma Sale, Stella Sale, Lucy Crooks and Esther Crooks. She is also survived by countless nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Prairie Theatre Exchange or The Winnipeg Folk Festival, two places that were near and dear to Marilyn.

An informal, come and go celebration of life will be held in September. Please reach out to her children for more information.

Martin Horseman

Martin Horseman was born on December 30, 1932, in Carlisle, England, and passed away peacefully on the evening of July 25, 2026. The family would like to express thanks to the staff of HSC Emergency and H4 for the care, respect, and support they showed Martin and the family during an incredibly difficult time.

He was the second youngest of six children born to Herbert Sylvester Horseman and Sarah Mary Sirey Horseman. Martin grew up during the Great Depression and later the Second World War in Carlisle, England. Even though there were few luxuries, he enjoyed his childhood and had many fond memories of the people he grew up with. When Martin was 11, he was chosen to attend Carlisle Grammar School, which gave him greater educational and work opportunities. After graduating from school, he worked at different jobs before being accepted into a drafting program. While apprenticing, he earned a certificate in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a draftsman for a coal cleaning equipment company.

At that time, all able-bodied men were expected to complete two years of compulsory military service. Martin chose the Royal Air Force and trained as an Aircraft Instrument Technician. He worked with several fighter squadrons in Great Britain before being deployed to Cyprus during the Suez Canal crisis. After his deployment, he returned to his old job as a draftsman for a short while before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force and moving to Canada in 1959.

He was posted to Centralia, Ontario, where he met Rose Marie Johnson. After a short time in Trenton, Ontario, he was sent to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Rose Marie had been transferred. They reconnected and married in Saskatoon December 12, 1959. During his military career, Martin worked on many interesting construction projects in different places across Canada. He especially enjoyed working on radar stations in the north. Many of his projects were unique and are still in use today. After retiring from the military, Martin joined the Civil Service and worked for the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration in Saskatchewan and then for Transport Canada in Manitoba. He fully retired from service in 1996 and remained in Winnipeg until his passing.

Martin and Rose Marie had three daughters (Heather, Sally, and Nina) and a son Peter. He was predeceased by his daughters Heather and Sally, and his son Peter. After Peter passed away in 1967, Gary joined the family. Martin loved children and was a fantastic father. If you wanted to learn to skate, swim, or ski, he would learn alongside you – even offering to take university calculus if it helped to do it together. He always supported others dreams and did whatever he could to help achieve them. He spent a lot of time sliding on his belly learning to figure skate, and even though swimming was not his strength, he gave it his best. Martin was never afraid to try something new.

When Martin wanted to try something new, he would do research first. He had been an accomplished boxer in Great Britain and kept boxing during his early military service. No one in the family could skip rope better than he could. Martin enjoyed detailed work like fixing watches or cameras, and he shared his love of photography and leatherwork with his grandsons Matthew and Marshall. He started playing golf when he lived in Trenton, and his passion for the game stayed with him through many provinces and years. He not only learned to play well but also built his own clubs and always looked for ways to improve his game and help others with theirs. Even if his advice was not always welcomed, the recipient generally benefited from it.

His love and support for family continued with the arrival of his grandchildren. Matthew, Marshall, and Arielle were lucky to have his support as they grew up. He often said that his favorite job was when he retired and became a caregiver. He spent many hours rocking, talking, and connecting with the little ones. As they grew, he attended every game, show, or recital while cheering them on from the sidelines. Martin was privileged to spend time with his great-granddaughter Adeleine (Arielle and Patrick), who was born in February 2026. They shared many moments “talking” during his final months. One of his last requests of the family was to “take care of the baby”.

Martin was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Mary; his siblings John, Mary, Herbert, Sylvester, and Patrick; his daughters Heather and Sally; his son Peter; his in-laws Minnie and Ernest; his brothers-in-law Glen and Eric; his grandson Ethan, and other extended family members. He is survived by his wife Rose Marie, daughter Nina (George), son Gary, grandsons Matthew (Natalie), Marshall, Kent, Darion, granddaughter Arielle (Patrick), great-granddaughter Adeleine, and many extended family members and friends.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on September 5th, 2026, at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Ardath, Saskatchewan. Martin lived a full life and will be greatly missed.

DEL SHERMAN
MAY 6, 1940 - JULY 23, 2026

It is with great sadness that the family of Adele (Del) Sherman announces her passing, peacefully after a lengthy illness.

She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Edward, grandson Jordan Polanski, daughter Cori Polanski, son Peter Arthur, and Jack Dierckens, with whom she shared her life in the years following the passing of their spouses. She is survived by sons Mark and Jeff (Janine), son-in-law Ken Polanski, and daughter-in-law Julie Hawkins. She also leaves to mourn her grandchildren, Dean, Delaney, Deandra Sherman (Paul), Hayley Hart-Schofield (Ross) and Trevor Sherman (Nikki), Jadrien, Matthew and Peter Roger Sherman (Cassie), Everett (Julia) and Sullivan (Reagan) Polanski, great-grandchildren Drake, Tessa, Shane and Sloane, her nieces, nephews and their families.

Del was born in Winnipeg to Gladys and Clifford Walker. As an only-child of two only-children, she always said she became very good at entertaining herself. Growing up on Minto Street she often played near the Minto Armoury and loved to march alongside the marching band when they were out practicing. The band would wait for her to join when they saw her coming.

The family moved to Fort Whyte in the 1950’s where they owned Walker’s Chip Stand and the Fort Whyte Dance Hall, with Cliff’s parents. Del’s father was a musician and played in the band, while Del’s mother ran the restaurant. Del would often be seen behind the counter helping out and serving milkshakes. The family also loved spending time at their fishing cottage at Bird River.

Del met Peter Sherman, from Oak Bluff, who worked at Canada Cement located down the road from Walker’s Chip Stand, and they were married in 1958. Del was thrilled to no longer be an only-child as she joined the large Sherman family: Peter’s five sisters and their families, and his father. Peter and Del raised their four children in the original Sherman farmhouse in Oak Bluff until 1967, when they moved their family into Fort Garry. In their retirement years, Peter and Del returned to live on the farm in Oak Bluff once again.

Del was actively involved in the Fort Garry community, when her children were young, including running the canteen at the local Victoria Community Club. She was a hockey mom, known for shuttling lots of kids to sporting activities around the city. Del was a long-time active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in St. Norbert. She enjoyed curling and was often seen at the Pembina Curling Club and going to out-of-town bonspiels with friends. Right into her 80’s, she was a long-time member of a ladies bowling team at Academy Lanes.

She was a nature-lover and known for rescuing many birds and creatures over the years, including a pet raccoon that she brought home, in the palm of her hand, to her children. The raccoon later made a television appearance on Archie and His Friends due to his charming personality. Del loved fishing and hunting - she was known to be quite a good shot - and spending time at the family cottage in Albert Beach.

Del was deeply loved for being a devoted mother of her four children and their families. She was happiest surrounded by the chaos of large gatherings of family and friends, and was famous for serving her fabulous cabbage roles, Swedish meatballs, potato salad, green tomato pickle, among many other family favourites. She was always quick to laugh and ready to join in the fun. She was a great friend to many and carried her happy and positive outlook throughout her life. She will be missed by all who have known her.

The family would like to thank Del’s family doctor Sheldon Permack and his team for many years of care, and the wonderful community at The Boulton which gave Del two more years of enjoyment in living at at time when she thought things would never be the same again. Our heartfelt thanks to the many dedicated professionals at CancerCare Manitoba for their efforts throughout her illness; to the special people at Home Care who managed her transition to palliative care; and to the expert teams at The Riverview Health Center and The Simkin Center, who supported and cared for Del with so much compassion and empathy during her last months. As her family, we simply could not have asked for more from all of these skilled and caring individuals - thank you.

In keeping with Del’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, The Saul and Claribel Simkin Center, or a charity of your choosing.
